I promise to give you exactly what this title promises, but first…
This sort of article, right here, the one I’m writing right now is exactly what I would constantly click on. Each time I’d see something like this, I’d click…
And I’d never think to ask the critical questions… Questions like, “What does this author know about my target market?” OR “How could the exact types of content reach both the cubicle dweller reaching for the next rung on the corporate ladder AND the rebellious, determined, balls-to-the-wall self-bosser?”
Yeah… I never questioned any of that. I’d see a post like this one… or something about the EXACT time and day to post content…. or EXACTLY what to say to increase the number of YES’s I received.
And I’d click… expectant. I’d read and take notes.
And then I’d implement, hopeful.
But then… it wouldn’t work and I’d wonder how everyone on the internet could be so wrong… or maybe it was me… maybe I was “doing it wrong.”
The hard truth is that YOU should know your own market better than anyone else. (Quick 2-question test regarding how well you REALLY know your market) YOU should know them so well that you KNOW what they click on, what lights them up, what ticks them off, etc.
The other hard truth? There are VERY FEW universal laws. ONE, however, is this:
YOU MUST SPEAK DIRECTLY TO YOUR PROSPECT AND YOU MUST NOT — EVER — BORE THEM.
So, if you do not know your market intimately, START THERE because the rest of this post will not help you. If you DO know your market intimately and want some ideas for how to vary your content to attract more of them, here you go:
HOW TO POSTS — These are posts that will generate the highest amount of traffic. HOWEVER, you and I both know that we will often seek out a HOW TO video or how to post, use it for the moment and never remember where it came from. HOW TO POSTS get a lot of traffic, but often result in meaningless “one-night stand” sort of relationships with those visiting our site.
(Fix: Mix in some stories or a REAL TALK message in with your HOW TO post to create a connection with your new visitor.)
REAL TALK POSTS — These are real, raw, vulnerable posts… the ones that truly create a connection with your market. Keep these posts coming, give them a POINT (so it’s not all about you) but share some of yourself… so that YOUR PEOPLE will immediately know that you are one of them.
RAH RAH POSTS — These are feel good posts, stories or quotes of inspiration. They’ll be shared more often, but be careful that you don’t allow the reader/viewer to forget YOUR BUSINESS as a key to that moment of inspiration.
INSPIRATIONAL, HERE’S WHO YOU REALLY ARE POSTS — These call the inner rock stars out of your market. They speak to who your market REALLY IS without their resistance and B.S. and excuses. It calls out who they want to be… and who you ALREADY see them as. These MAGNETIZE your market and get them into ACTION taking mode.
LONG, WALK WITH ME POSTS — Also called “epic” content that will walk your market through a process, a situation, an obstacle. I recommend that you take EVERY HOW TO post, publish it — yes — but then, later, build it out into more of a “journey” post that you walk your market through… it will get great TRAFFIC (like the HOW TO POST) but your BEST prospects will read all of it and also feel more connected as a result.
