This is a Biblical story applied to your business. And it SOOOO applies.
In the old Testament (2 Kings 5) there was this man. Naaman is described as a friend of the King, a famous and rich man, “a great man,” who had come down with leprosy. In his misery, he was told to go and see God’s prophet Elisha for healing.
So, he gathered some money and a letter from the King himself and asked Elisha to heal him.
Elisha says, “no sweat,” (I’m paraphrasing.) “Go and wash yourself 7 times in the Jordan river.”
Naaman walks away disgusted and discouraged… having NO intention of washing himself in the Jordan River. His exact response was that the rivers where HE comes from are better than the Jordan River. lol…
And I’m SURE he was thinking the healing protocol was silly, too simple and maybe beneath him. But he had NO intention of trying it.
A servant girl asks him, “If Elisha had asked you to do something GREAT, wouldn’t you have done it? Why won’t you wash and be healed?”
End of story is that he does the simple thing
the thing he thought silly
and too simple
and beneath him.
And he walked away healed.
I’ve been thinking about this story a lot as more and more entrepreneurs are ending up at my proverbial or real door… most often referred in secret… as they are struggling in their formerly WILDLY successful business.
They have the BIG NAME
They have the BIG connections.
They have the BIG media.
They have THE BEST and MOST KNOWN mentors.
They have teams to help them “scale.”
They’re using JUST the right software,
and have the most impressive JV partners, lol…
And yet…
their business is not producing.
Like Naaman with leprosy, they’re miserable and need (business) healing.
So, I ask them to strip things back,
to do the SIMPLE things.
Because they are STUCK in a cycle, a pattern, a habit of REPEAT.
Literally continuing to do what is not working.
While they are HERE to get help,
and many travel a long way to my little home town,
they aren’t REALLY considering anything OTHER than
more of the same, but bigger.
When I ask them to REGROUP,
refocus,
reconsider THAT WHICH IS NO LONGER WORKING…
they AT FIRST
(because MOST come around)
act like Naaman.
When I ask them to STRIP IT BACK
to the most basic,
so we can HEAL the core of their business,
so we can DIAL IN
before we DIAL UP…
they act like Naaman.
At first.
Guys, the solution you are looking for IS the most simple one. Don’t dismiss it.
If it is no longer working,
STRIP IT BACK to the core of what ALWAYS works.
P.S. Unrelated to business, my Bible Study group will kick off NEXT WEEK with a Biblical study of “Who Am I?” This group will be for Christian women and Christian -curious women. Message me if you want an invite. Always free.
I’M TOO FANCY FOR ALL OF THAT. PLUS, I’M FAMOUS. (AND RICH.)
