Long ago, I wrote a similar post after hearing my office mate (at the time) spend three days at the end of EACH month…. calling on customers to “help her reach this new level” in her MLM business. She would almost beg… “I only need X more purchases.” or “I only have to sell $XXX more in product! Can you help me out?”
NOTHING about how amazing the products were.
NOTHING about the ease of purchasing Or anything enticing like, “If you buy today, I’ll deliver by NOON because I have this product sitting in my closet.”
NOTHING about how the timing might be good for the buyer.
I calmly suggested she turn those “sales conversations” around and focus on the buyer… vs. her own “rank.” My unsolicited suggestion was very poorly received. lol… AND ignored. MONTH after painful MONTH.
And I’m seeing the same sort of thing today,
not EVEN in the direct sales industry..
but in coaching…
publishing…
consulting…
BUY THIS ____________ BECAUSE I’M TRYING TO REACH ___________STATUS.
HELP ME TURN DOWN THIS JOB OFFER. I ONLY NEED 3 COMPANIES TO HIRE ME AS A CONSULTANT TO KEEP FROM TAKING A JOB. (totally serious.)
Your business should never be marketed as a charity case. EVER. Woman, YOU provide ACTUAL value to your people. Insane value. So focus on THAT.
Make it about THEM. Not some rank. Not some status. Make it about what THEIR purchase will mean for THEM.
I PROMISE you’ll make more sales. AND…. you’ll respect yourself more in the morning. 😉
